Resident Intimacy in Senior Living
The opportunity for socialization is one of the best benefits of senior living. It can also be one of the most controversial for families and team members when socialization turns to sexual expression. A person’s sexual nature and need for intimacy doesn’t end at a particular age, with a diagnosis of dementia, or with a move to senior living. However, many are unsure of how to respond and have little to guide them. At the close of this program, participants will be able to:
- Recognize a range of reactions from team members, family, and other residents to sexual expression in senior living.
- Discuss issues surrounding sexual expression for residents with dementia, including resident rights, duty to protect, and consent.
- Examine policies and best practices to guide team member response to sexual expression of residents with dementia in senior living.
