IMPORTANCE OF CULTURAL COMPETENCY IN DEMENTIA CARE

1 CE Credit Offered

Presented by Amy Matthews, Dementia Consultant

This workshop will address the neurodegenerative changes that occur in Alzheimer’s and related dementia disorders, and describe how they affect communication, memory, ability, and processing. This workshop will also discuss the impact of one’s culture, which includes customs, family roles, beliefs, and values – and how they affect behavior, interaction, and communication as the condition progresses. Finally, we’ll discuss the importance of understanding our own cultural views and how they affect how we act and interact with individuals with Alzheimer’s or related dementia disorders.

Learning Objectives

  • Define two neurodegenerative changes affecting communication that occur with dementia.
  • Explain how a clinician or caregiver’s cultural background may influence interactions with clients who have been diagnosed with dementia.
  • List two positive treatment outcomes of identifying the cultural background of clients with dementia.

Each professional is responsible for the individual requirements as stipulated by his/her licensing agency.
